NEWEST CONTENT:
Because of our reunion...the committee was able to have $1,600 to donate to the new FKHS!  Pat Smith Nunn and Carol Baker Dawson presented the check to the school superintendent Todd Curkendall (who seems to truly care about the students of the Ft. Knox School System).  The funds will go to the Student Activity Fund (SAF).  Additional photos, including a pic of the empty lot that used to hold our high school, can be found on the photo page of this site.

Our Brat Reunion ~ 2009

By Carol Baker Dawson (1973)

One-by-one, they came.  The guy who sat in front of you in homeroom, the girl who you looked up to and admired, the musician who played in the marching band, the girl who was known for her bubbly personality, the football stud, the cheerleader, the kid you once dated, the girl who you never got to know well, your first crush, and those who came before and after your life at Ft. Knox High School.

Many friends lost touch after high school, absorbed in daily routines and conventional (or unconventional) obligations. However, this weekend would prove to be different.  It would magically take us back 30+ years and we would once again be 17…swaddled in the familiarity of a past life when hearts were, by and large, untroubled and days involved more play than burden.

We quickly became wrapped up in the combined energy of laugher, memories, and just plain fun…reminiscing down halls of forgotten locker numbers and dancing the night away to the Aleve/Advil-rock.  We gambled on the ponies under the twin spires and took insightful lessons from Kris Kristofferson and a film about our journey home as Brats.

We spoke of seemingly creative stories of high school adventure and success, while simultaneously struggling with recollections regarding our first kiss and other awkward moments.  As if it top it all, our superstar teachers validated our need to know we possessed special qualities that made us stand out among our peers.

We laughed until we cried and marveled at how quickly we made connections as if we were back in time. We arrived with distant memories of friendships that had been adrift.  We left with stirred up emotions and hearts ready to burst from the ruckus of memories and sensations.

New memories and friendships were added to the old…the time passed much too quickly. This time, we will not let go.

We were honored to coordinate this reunion...to bring our Brat friends together.

Eagles maintain tradition
OUR READERS WRITE

I was a sideline observer to a remarkable event that occurred Tuesday night at North Hardin High School. Our Fort Knox High School boys varsity soccer team was taking on local rival North Hardin in what turned out to be a well-played and physical match. It was Senior Night for the Trojans and our Fort Knox players waited patiently on the sidelines while North Hardin parents recognized the many contributions and highlights involving their children.
At the end of the ceremony, parents left the field and the boys lined up for introductions. The announcer called each starting player by position. Once complete, both teams turned and faced the flag and stood ready for the national anthem. After a brief pause, the announcer came on and said he had misplaced the CD and that we would just skip the national anthem and get on with the game. North Hardin broke from its formation and quickly assumed positions on the field. The referees took off at a slow jog to take their positions. Fort Knox didn’t move.
Instead, the Eagles all came together in a mass, continued to face the flag, placed their hands over their hearts, and started to sing the national anthem. North Hardin and the referees froze in their tracks and immediately placed their hands over their hearts. The crowd saw what was happening and quickly faced the flag and joined in. Voices cracked in the stands and on the field. It was the worst rendition of the national anthem that I’ve ever heard. Yet... It was perfect. Ever wonder what’s “right” with our kids? Sometimes we find the answer in the strangest places.
